These past few days have been a real conflict for me.
Any author wants their new book to do well, even become a best seller. With the average book selling about 500 copies over its shelf life, best seller status usually remains a pipe dream for most authors.
When a book is released, the author becomes a publicity whore, seeking and accepting any and all media interviews, whether print, TV or radio, in order to sell as many books as possible, as quickly as possible.
In the past week, NO GOOD-BYES has gone nuclear. Rising from #400,000 on Amazon's Top 100, to 1,200 out of almost eight million books.
On Amazon's Top 100 True Crime category, the book has gone from #5,000 (last place) to #7. While these numbers may fluctuate daily, the fact remains that the book became a best seller almost overnight. And, there is little doubt that with the current media attention the book will get to #1 eventually.
Why, then, with all these record-breaking numbers for an unreleased book, do I feel dirty?
I did not write NO GOOD-BYES to be a best seller, never crossed my mind. I wrote it to help solve the mystery of the missing McStay family. My definition of 'success' with NO GOOD-BYES is not monetary, but moral: If the book helps solve the mystery, it is a success, regardless of how many copies may sell.
It is clear to me that after yesterday's two articles in the Daily Mail UK, I need to stop this publicity machine now and reset my reason for writing NO GOOD-BYES, before it is too late.
Here is a headline from one of yesterday's Daily Mail UK stories:
'I will turn on you': Revealed, the shocking emails sent by wife to husband before they vanished without a trace with their two children three years ago
This is not what I wanted.
Publicity such as this belittles the McStay family, regardless of how many issues Summer may have. I understand that the DM UK has seven million daily readers in Europe and the US and that it is 'rare to get this kind of publicity for an unreleased book.' Doesn't matter because it is wrong and I don't believe it will help solve this mystery.
Yes, Summer did write those emails, and yes, I have many more that I did not include in the book, and yes, I have theorized that Summer may have 'done something or had something done to Joseph.' But, this is only one theory and there are others. The intrigue of the book is that it leaves the solving of this mystery up to the reader. My theory is not any more important or accurate than yours. Summer may have had nothing to do with the disappearance and may be a victim herself. Until this case is solved, one could claim that an alien spaceship snatched the family. No one knows what happened, not even law enforcement.
I take the blame for much of this mess. When asked by the media interviewers for my theory, I have blamed Summer more times than not and haven't talked about the other possibilities. This was a mistake. It's not about what I think, it's about what you think.
Further, I no longer believe that 'any publicity is good publicity' for the book. I have canceled my appearances on the national entertainment and news television shows because all they wanted to talk about were Summer's emails. I have canceled two appearances on prominent radio talk shows for the same reason. And, I have cancelled my book events in Southern California.

Personally, if no one else ever buys a copy of my book, I won't be discouraged at all. It has already been an undeserved success. May God Bless Joseph, Summer, Gianni and Joseph Mateo McStay.
I don't understand this about face on your part.
ReplyDeleteIf you've clearly stated your conclusion as a theory as you indicated previously, your true motivation for writing it was to help keep the case moving and focused on finding these two boys, all profits are going to TES, and nothing in the book is fabricated, then why stop now?
Why not use future publicity to clarify that your conclusion is just one of many possibilities and that you are not profiting from the book sales? Confused.
Which is exactly what I intend to do. I am not giving up. I still have many interviews, some national, and will try to refocus these onto what really matters; the family. I have invested too much into this case to walk away.
DeleteFor almost 3 years the media has give us what the family has told them. Joseph and Summer were a happy loving couple, Summer was such a loving mother, etc. Now that we find what Summer was really like people are jumping all over it. I would hope that the media would further look at others in the book who have done questionable things. A brother that bleed his missing brothers company dry and then apparently let the webmaster sell the company. Same brother who borrowed 69,000+ fraudulently and never even made one payment on it. Hopefully the media will start looking at everyone in the book and not just Summer. I do not think Summer is a nice peron at all nor are other members of Joey's family. My heart goes out to both mothers of the missing. I don't think our media today does a good job at all so while you are putting all the blame on yourself they need to take responsibility for their lack of reporting on the whole book also.
ReplyDeleteI hope your book is able to help find the truth to what happened to the missing McMstays.
Janice Whitney
Good to hear. I haven't read the book yet, but have followed the case closely since the start.
ReplyDeleteSo long as you make it crystal clear that your conclusion is just one possibility and you can support it with facts (nothing fabricated) which viewed as a whole led you to your personal interpretative theory/conclusion, I see nothing but good in this story gaining so much attention.
Both sides of the couples' family claim that the McStays would not willingly walk away from their lives with no goodbyes. So, the more people who are aware that that all or some of the family members are out there somewhere walking around (or sadly, not walking around), the better chances of finding out what really happened - somebody knows somebody who knows somebody who knows something.
If, on the other hand, the couple chucked it all and left voluntarily, this book is not a good thing for Joseph and Summer (but it's not a crime to go off the radar and they can rectify any unwanted attention with one piece of communication which includes absolute verification regarding the identity of the sender and an assurance that all is well).
I don't see the downside to your publication, except to you personally if being accused, rightly or wrongly, of exploiting the case for personal gain is extremely troubling to you. Personally, I don't care about your motives (and have no reason to doubt them at this time even if I did), I care only about finding out what happened to the McStays.
Good luck.
These are just my opinions.
I think you did a great job of writing the book and appreciate the time you took and you should not have to back away from publicity for the book - I don't think that MM or PM would if given the chance when they write their book - and I love your comment about how your theory isn't anymore important than someone else's theory - it really leaves a person with a whole bunch of questions to think about - one being the brother and mother blunder chapter - where I didn't agree with Tracy's account of the story because SB has also lost her son as well and the mother and BA could have handled things differently because I think they were mean to SB - I think it is good that you presented it because the reader will make up their own mind regardless of personal feelings - the attention the book is giving the families should be welcome and people can usually make up their own minds no matter how nasty the emails are about the person - it's good to be aware and the family should be this proactive as you are about putting the word out there because when MM and PM write the book it will become more like a rebuttal book as opposed to a narrative - you have just as much write as any other author to handle the publicity as you see fit - and if you are more comfortable not doing the media blitzes at different locations that's up to you - but I think that PM and MM will not show the same deference that you are showing when writing the books.
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job and only thing I noticed was SB's side of the story not in the book in reference to Tracy's accusations lodged against her - that brings up good questions still about the possibility of legal documents that could ultimately lead to the mystery being solved.
I think that the book will gain the attention regardless of whether or not you attend the events mentioned above - but I think that when they ask the questions that would also be your opportunity to address and restate your purpose to the media.
What I think is a shame are some posters on websleuths making their mind up and prejudging SB without at least thinking about her side of the story - and so far it doesn't appear that Tracy has painted a clear and accurate picture of what happened according to the way that I read the chapter and Tracy and Blanche had ways that they could have responded to make things better for themselves - like making arrangements ahead of time when the McStay's kindly let them know about the cleaning for the foreclosure - I don't see how any poster reading the book could put all of the blame on SB and not realize that we weren't there to see what happened with that particular instance - a few posters deciding that they think what SB did was greedy when they don't know SB at all and they are basing their opinion on their own personal experience instead of objectively thinking and analyzing what we read in the book - the National Exposure and many different viewpoints bring viewpoints from all around the world that add value to the discussion in the mystery.
I respect that you wrote the book and think the family should frankly appreciate it because this does focus on the family - there are some positive things you could bring on the interviews even though that's what they seem to want to ask as you mentioned in your statement - because you have the power to steer the conversation to focus on the book - I don't doubt the book will get to number one on Amazon and will quickly gain speed with the hardback selling as well.
Don't dismiss the good things you've brought to this case. You've created a narrative where there was none. Everyone is taking a fresh look at this case.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your mind is blown by the attention the book is receiving. And, I'm sure you are exhausted. I bet it's been a tough year trying to put this together for the anniversary. Just finish your part and then let Mike and Patrick take it from there.
We have all changed our minds about the circumstances surrounding this case. We've done it many, many, many times.
Take care of yourself. I don't want to have to worry about you too lol! Go take a vacation with your lovely wife. Take some time to regroup as they say. And May God Bless the Baker family.
Thanks for the kind words and a vacation sounds like fun! I am not giving up on the case, just no longer granting any interviews with any member of the media not concerned with the whole family. Still many interviews to go. I have done my part and do hope that MM and PM now "take it from here." Thanks again!
DeleteYes, Please take a break and come back reloaded!!! Thanks, I bought the e-book and read it. Even you present new evidence or facts in the book; at this point, I am with more questions with not answers at all. The mistery continue.........
ReplyDeleteIs someone "muzzling" you? I'm taken aback, truly.
ReplyDeleteNo, not being muzzled!
DeleteI too wondered immediately if "muzzling" or something that makes litigation more concerning has arisen.
ReplyDeleteAlso wondered if you have reconsidered the likelihood of your theory based upon re-examination of the facts, or if new information caused you to consider it less viable? If that's the case, nothing wrong with that and no reason that can't be addressed with the media. Things develop/evolve/change throughout the course of a mystery.
I don't see how you're really going to be able to control what any media focuses upon and I would expect that all media would want to put the spotlight primarily on what's new to the public domain (such as the emails, the personal drama within the immediate family, and your conclusion/theory). I think those areas, while most controversial, are in fact what is drawing people to the book and the media surrounding it. Wanting the biggest audience in order to bring the most attention to the missing McStays (and/or for other reasons) isn't wrong or shameful as far as I'm concerned.
Thank you,

Hey CuriousAnon! No, I haven't changed my theory, but it is only a theory. I guess I just got to the point yesterday that I had had enough of this case being turned into a National Enquirer case. When the media focuses on Summer's emails, they lose sight of the reason for the book, which is to get more people following this mystery. My theory may be correct, and if we find one day that it is, well, so be it. However, it may not be right and I just don't want the media to waste their time only on one theory. There are other theories involving the players in this case that I believe are just as controversial. Thanks for your comment!
DeleteHi. Please don't give up. I think u have done a wonderful thing and have brought this case forward. This is all about the babies. U r their hero!
ReplyDeleteHi Rick, I have been told that you were going to be interviewed by Inside Edition in Charlotte today at 11 and canceled at the last minute? Do you mind if I ask why, because they had reserved the studio and even offered to pick you up and drive you there? Don't you believe it was important for the case?
ReplyDeleteInteresting you would know this? I appreciate very much Inside Edition's interest in this case and I really wanted to do this show, but after the Daily Mail's articles, I just couldn't. My segment was only 3 minutes and their interest was to put Summer's emails on the screen. I don't want this to be just about Summer, there are other people who look just as guilty. I will only do shows from now on that will look at the whole picture. There is so much more to this case beyond Summer. Missing money, someone selling Joseph's company so fast after the disappearance. We need to look harder and dig deeper.
DeleteWow this book really brought a lot of peoples actions into question. The transfering of the money from Joey's accounts by Dan and Mikey into their own accounts. I wonder was any of that looked into by the police as far as what Dan or Mikey did with the money once they put it into their own accounts etc? What really bugs me the most is if anyone in my family went missing and I was so hopeful that they would come home I wouldn't go selling all of their personal items or tossing out their clothes. Why would Mikey and Susan do just that, and then Susan turn around and make comments regarding summer "where she is she won't be needing this". How did she know and exactly what is that suppose to mean? Where did the futon cover go and the sister said all of the bedding was stripped off of the air mattress, was it taken off to be washed, was it used to wrap someones body in it, was it used to transfer gathered clothes and items quickly. So weird. I also can not believe that Susan would go to joey's house and clean the kitchen wiping away evidence that could have helped find her son and his family. Unless she knows more and was cleaning it on purpose. Most people dont just up and leave and and walk away from large sums of money in their bank accounts or without prepairing for a departure. People who do just up leave have a reason to run and get off the grid fast or they were being taken against their will. Hopefully the sequel will be about how they had been found alive and well living in hawaii. Praying for this family.
ReplyDeleteHi, Rick, I just wanted to say thank you for the time and expense you've spent on this investigation, despite the ridicule, insults, and degradation some people have sent your way. I can see that your book is stirring up interest again and that's fantastic!!! We need to find those kids or at least learn if they are ok. I've been following the McStay case since the beginning and the odd behaviors of MM and DK make it seem like they knew the family wasn't coming back. Thanks again...and hang in there!
ReplyDeletePhyllis
Rick you have brought attention back to this case, which is greatly needed, you should be proud. I think the majority of people that know about this case thought Summer was questionable long before your book came out, we just finally got to see something to prove it. If anything, remember that you are helping to spread info/pictures about two missing innocent children and now many, many more people will be on the lookout for them. I thought the book was great and as someone who has closely followed this case, I thank you. God bless Rick.
ReplyDeleteI followed. Thr case. As i live in fallbrook. Would go. To library. Tomorrow. To see. You but getting over flu. Can't wait to get your book . This is biggest mystery since. Those. Three women. In Oklahoma. Disappeared. I think it could still be possibly pedophile. Related. They wanted kids. Did not care who they took. With. Them
